1. Hospitals that pay per diem fees, or flat rates, to specialist physicians for emergency department call coverage have been viewed as teetering the line of the federal Anti-Kickback Statute, but an opinion from HHS' Office of Inspector General ruled those per diem payments may be OK.

2. In fiscal year 2012, SunLink Health Systems Chairman, President and CEO Robert Thornton Jr. recorded total compensation of $732,647 — more than double what he earned in 2011.

3. Virtua, a four-hospital health system based in Marlton, N.J., has been growing rapidly over the past several years, and the system had three of the highest-paid healthcare executives in the Philadelphia region.

4. Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanguard Health Systems and Mike Duggan, CEO of Detroit Medical Center and Detroit market president of Vanguard, agreed to cut Mr. Duggan's salary as he explores a bid to run for Detroit's mayor.
