Due to an unexpected increase in infections, officials at UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh are threatening to use disciplinary action against any physicians and staff who do fail to follow infection control guidelines, according to a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report.
Hospital administrators said they will levy $1,000 fines against physicians and $250 fines for residents and fellows who do not abide by proper infection control measures. Other staff members will be sent home for a day without pay.
It has not been determined whether employees will be fined at other hospitals in the system if they are observed not washing their hands.
The last time UPMC had an outbreak of this type of antibiotic-resistant bacteria was in 2006.
