NLRB Files Complaint Against Meadowlands Hospital in New Jersey

The National Labor Relations Board has issued a complaint against Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center in Secaucus, N.J., over alleged violations of collective bargaining rights.

The NLRB complaint consolidates charges of unfair labor practices filed by the Health Professionals and Allied Employees union against the hospital between August 2012 and March 2013. The charges accuse the hospital of the following, according to the HPAE news release:

•    Improperly assigning work to non-union workers
•    Hiring non-union "nurse interns" at minimum wage and failing to pay proper wages required by the union contract
•    Refusing to provide the union with information to enable the union to represent staff in discipline cases
•    Refusing to allow union staff to meet with members in the hospital cafeteria
•    Laying off employees without regard to seniority and without union bargaining about a proper layoff system  

HPAE represents 295 nurses, technicians and service workers at Meadowlands Hospital.

MHA, a for-profit investor group, has owned the hospital since late 2010. A hospital spokesman told North Jersey the allegations are "baseless," and said management is fully cooperating with the NLRB.

A hearing for the NLRB complaint is set for July 9.
