Viewpoint: EMS agencies need telemedicine

Paramedicine professionals need telemedicine services to address the changing role of EMS agencies, fire officer Robert Avsec wrote in Fire Chief.

A large portion of the population — an estimated 75 million — live in rural areas, meaning it is more difficult for them to reach various healthcare facilities, Mr. Avsec wrote. EMS agencies, in turn, have witnessed an increase in calls for service that do not require ambulance transportation.

To combat this issue, some EMS agencies have requested adding telemedicine services to their departments. These additions would help both EMS agencies and hospitals by streamlining communication and providing more specialized and affordable patient care, according to Mr. Avsec.
