UVA Health System to leverage telehealth for chronic disease care

Charlottesville-based University of Virginia Health System is expanding current and adding new telehealth initiatives focusing on chronic disease management.

The health system plans on expanding or piloting numerous telehealth initiatives, including remote monitoring for diabetics, screenings for patients with diabetic eye disease as well as cardiac rehabilitation programs for heart failure patients.

Additionally, UVA researchers will identify health and fitness applications that are the most helpful and increase primary care provider access to specialists via EHRs. The health system is also creating training courses to help caregivers identify and treat chronic diseases.

The telehealth initiatives will be conducted through the UVA Center for Telehealth. It will be supported by $750,000-plus in funds from the CDC and the Virginia Department of Health.
