UPMC-backed telemedicine venture acquires competitor TripleCare

Curvai Health, a UPMC-backed telemedicine company that provides services to nursing homes, acquired one of its competitors, TripleCare, on Dec. 4.

TripleCare is a telemedicine provider offering services in the post-acute, long-term care space, including skilled nursing facilities. TripleCare's platform connects nursing-home residents to physicians in situations where a physician is unable to provide in-person care, such as on nights or weekends, to help avoid costly transfers or unnecessary emergency room visits.

Similarly, Curvai provides general and specialty care, after-hours coverage, geriatric psychiatry consultations, and "bring your own provider" solutions to more than 40 nursing homes in three states. Through the acquisition, Curvai will expand its offerings to nearly 100 facilities across 14 states.

"By combining the strengths of these two telemedicine leaders in the post-acute care industry, the facilities and residents we serve will have access to the highest-quality care and most innovative telemedicine technology," said Alissa Meade, Curavi's president and CEO.

Ms. Meade will stay on as CEO of the combined company, and TripleCare interim CEO Mary Jo Gorman, MD, will serve on the company's board of directors. UPMC will remain the sole investor in Curvai.
