Marshfield Clinic launches remote monitoring program to reduce ED visits

Marshfield (Wis.) Clinic Health System is deploying telehealth software from remote monitoring provider Health Recovery Solutions to reduce avoidable emergence department visits.

The health system will first roll out the telehealth program at its Heart Failure Improvement Clinic, which serves roughly 1,500 patients with congestive heart failure. Marshfield initially will select patients who have experienced an exacerbation that required IV diuretics for the telehealth program.

Patients who are enrolled in the telehealth program will be given a 4G tablet. The tablet pairs with biometric devices allowing patients to record their own blood pressure, weight, heart rate and more. Patients' vital signs are automatically delivered to providers.

The telehealth program also encourages patient adherence to treatment plans through medication reminders and educational content. Patients can interact with providers through text, phone call or video chat.

After the initial launch, Marshfield plans to expand the telehealth program to the 350,000 patients it serves throughout north, central and western Wisconsin.
