SAP launches blockchain platform to verify prescription drugs

Software companies SAP and Chronicled have teamed up to deploy a blockchain solution to help pharmaceutical companies comply with the U.S. Drug Supply Chain Security Act, according to a Sept. 3 news release.

Per the agreement, Chronicled's MediLedger blockchain solution will serve as an integral part of the SAP Information Collaboration Hub for Life Sciences, a program designed to ensure patient safety and security for supply chain customers.

SAP's collaboration hub verifies the authenticity of medicine packages that are returned to wholesale distributors from hospitals and pharmacies. By adopting a blockchain platform, SAP will be able to improve information sharing across the industry's wide network.

The MediLedger lets users see verification routing within the collaboration hub. The goal is to leverage the blockchain solution to detect potential counterfeit products and, therefore, improve patient safety.
