Academic medical centers in New York City are seeing a wave of donations in support of cancer research, which may position the city as a premier location for scientists, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
NYU Langone Medical Center is the latest gift recipient, as it's expected to announce a $50 million donation from Laura and Isaac Perlmutter. Mr. Perlmutter is the CEO of Marvel Entertainment, and Mrs. Perlmutter has served on NYU Langone's board for more than 10 years. NYU Langone's cancer institute, which was founded in 2001, will be renamed after the Perlmutters.
Earlier this month, Ludwig Cancer Research, an international network of scientists, donated $90 million to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to further immuno-oncology research. Weill Cornell Medical College, which has a specialization in biomedical research, received $75 million from Sandra and Edward Meyer a few weeks ago. Weill Cornell then named a building after the Meyers.
"Worldwide, resources are contracting for cancer research, but New York is home to many generous philanthropists," according to WSJ report. The Perlmutters and Meyers, for instance, are New Yorkers and longtime donors to medical institutions.
