Highmark Spends $32M on Property for New Health System

In the past eight months, Pittsburgh-based insurer Highmark has spent $32 million in land acquisitions to build its $1 billion healthcare system to rival University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, according to a Tribune-Review report.

The payor has purchased property in five municipalities, but Highmark officials declined to comment on specific plans for the land — much of which is near existing UPMC facilities, according to the report.

Highmark's pending $475 million acquisition of West Penn Allegheny Health System in Pittsburgh still needs state approval.
