Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Jefferson Hills, Pa., and Pittsburgh-based health insurer Highmark are pursuing a strategic partnership in which Jefferson Regional will become a part of Highmark's integrated delivery system.
Jefferson Regional President and CEO John Dempster said the partnership will enhance the work of the hospital's medical staff and employees, and it will also expand services and new technologies to the community. For example, there are now plans of a new emergency department, expanded services in neurosurgery and gynecology and improved community-based wellness care with Highmark giving $75 million to Jefferson Regional's foundation.
"This partnership demonstrates the commitment of Highmark and Jefferson to working together to create a more modern, efficient healthcare system," said J. Robert Baum, PhD, Highmark's board chairman in a joint news release. "It keeps care in the community, creating greater convenience for patients and maintaining the economic vitality of the South Hills."
Highmark and Jefferson Regional aim to continue discussions and finalize a further deal later, which must be approved by the Pennsylvania attorney general and Allegheny County Orphan's Court. This is the second hospital deal for Highmark in the past year. Last June, it announced it would acquire Pittsburgh-based West Penn Allegheny Health system, although that deal is still awaiting regulatory approval.
