A Baltimore law firm lost the medical records of 161 patients suing cardiologist Mark G. Midei, MD, according to a York Daily Record report.
Baxter, Baker, Sidle, Conn & Jones' client Dr. Midei lost his medical license in July due to allegations he performed hundreds of unnecessary stent procedures in patients at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, Md. The medical records of 161 of these patients, along with information about the firm's cases, were on a portable hard drive that an employee of the firm lost on the Baltimore light rail on Aug. 4. The storage device was taken home nightly as a precaution against a fire or flood, according to the report.
The medical records included patients' names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers and insurance information. The data were password-protected but not encrypted.
Preferred Professional Insurance Co., which provides liability coverage to St. Joseph physicians and hired the law firm to represent Dr. Midei, offered affected patients a one-year membership to an anti-identity theft service
