Heart defects occur in about 1 in every 100 newborns per year, according to U.S. News & World Report.
The publication compiled a list of the 24 best children's hospitals for newborns with severe congenital heart defects. To make the list, hospitals had to meet two criteria: earning a top-50 ranking for U.S. News' 2018-19 best hospitals for pediatric cardiology & heart surgery, and performing at least 300 high-risk pediatric heart surgeries during the past four years.
