Illinois hospital reports cyberattack

Fairfield (Ill.) Memorial Hospital notified patients of a cybersecurity incident July 3 and is providing resources to protect patients' personal information.

The hospital "recently detected suspicious activity" on its network and took steps to secure its system. After identifying the problem, Fairfield Memorial contacted a cybersecurity firm to investigate the incident and determine the impact on patients and the hospital.

The investigation is ongoing and Fairfield Memorial is already making changes in response.

"As part of its ongoing commitment to the security of information, FMHA is reviewing and enhancing its existing policies and procedures related to data privacy to reduce the likelihood of a similar future event," the said in its notice.

The hospital's Facebook page notified patients of a network outage on June 24 saying the hospital was working with third-party specialists to restore systems.
