10 most, least diverse cities in the US

Several Maryland cities top WalletHub's list released April 17 of the most diverse cities in the U.S.

WalletHub compared 501 of the most populated cities — limiting each state to no more than 10 cities each — across five categories: socioeconomic diversity; cultural diversity; economic diversity; household diversity; and religious diversity. Using the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index method, a commonly accepted measure of market concentration, WalletHub evaluated the five categories using 13 metrics, which range from household income diversity to marital status diversity. The 10 most diverse cities, according to the analysis:

1. Gaithersburg, Md.

2. Germantown, Md.

3. Silver Spring, Md. 

4. Houston

5. Arlington, Texas

6. New York City

7. Jersey City, N.J.

8. Charlotte, N.C.

9. Dallas

10. Los Angeles

The 10 least diverse cities, according to the analysis:

1. Brattleboro, Vt. 

2. Rochester, N.H.

3. North Platte, Neb.

4. Keene, N.H.

5. Bangor, Maine

6. Provo, Utah

7. Orem, Utah

8. Morgantown, W.Va.

9. Dover, N.H.

10. Anaconda, Mont.
