10 'best hospital' cities with the most, least nurses per capita

Despite ranking as the second "best hospital city" in the U.S., Los Angeles has a relatively low rate of nurses per capita at 29.47, according to Medbelle, a digital healthcare company based in London.

Medbelle ranked the 100 "best hospital" cities in the world based on hospital infrastructure, quality and access. Twelve metrics were used, ranging from the number of hospital beds to the cost of medicine. Each metric is based on a 100-point scale, and cities were ranked based on overall highest score. Thirty-one U.S. cities made the list. Within those 31 cities, however, Medbelle observed a range in the supply of registered nurses.

Here are the five "best hospital" cities in the U.S. with the most nurses per capita:

  1. Ann Arbor, Mich. — 67.76 nurses per capita
  2. Birmingham, Ala. — 54.71
  3. Omaha, Neb. — 46.90
  4. New Orleans  — 46.85
  5. Indianapolis — 46.55

Here are the five "best hospital" cities in the U.S. with the least nurses per capita:

  1. Rochester, Minn. — 8.69 nurses per capita
  2. Phoenix — 27.64
  3. Seattle — 28.28
  4. Los Angeles — 29.47
  5. San Jose, Calif. — 29.52

"[T]his study illustrates that America has one of the highest-quality hospital infrastructures in the world, yet in terms of access to all citizens, USA benchmarks well below other developed countries," said Daniel Kolb, Medbelle cofounder and managing director, in a press release. "A key case is Houston which comes in the top 15 for world-class hospitals with a score of 94.92 out of 100, yet ranks second to last place in terms of access, with a score of only 48.83 out of 100."
