The Intersocietal Accreditation Commission has updated its MRI accreditation standards and guidelines to reflect changes made after a public comment period.
A majority of the revisions cover remote MRI technology standards, according to a Nov. 20 news release from the commission.
Here are five things to know about the update:
- In response to staffing shortages, the commission has developed guidelines to assist accredited facilities in utilizing remote scanning.
- As the technology becomes more widely used, required training and experience as well as unique patient and facility safety criteria must be met for the use of smaller, portable MRI scanners.
- Due to physician supervision "difficulties," the commission has made revisions to the contrast policy, allowing for supervision from appropriately trained non-physician personnel.
- Effective immediately, facilities applying for accreditation must comply with the new standards.
- The standards are composed by physicians, physicists and technologists from IAC sponsoring organizations and reviewed by the commission's board.
