St. Louis-based Mercy has appointed John Mohart, MD, as executive vice president and COO, marking the first time a physician will fill this role at the 50-hospital health system.
Dr. Mohart joined Mercy in 2012 as a cardiologist and most recently served as president of its community operations. He previously led Mercy's cardiovascular steering committee in 2014 and was named vice president of cardiovascular services in 2018.
Dr. Mohart oversaw the system's quality and safety efforts throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and guided Mercy in reducing more than 100,000 unnecessary patient days over the past two years — improving care quality, boosting patient outcomes and expanding access.
"We have more healthcare providers as top leaders at Mercy than we've ever had before because we believe they are key to getting healthcare right, and Dr. Mohart, who has been a senior leader for many years, has shown that he has the expertise to unify care for our patients whether it's in the hospital, clinic, virtually or anywhere they receive care at Mercy," Mercy President and CEO Steve Mackin said.
Before joining Mercy, Dr. Mohart was a physician leader at a large multi-specialty group in Missouri. He initially began his career as a CPA at PwC. He earned his medical degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia and completed his residency and cardiology fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.
"Dr. Mohart's passion as a physician and his strong belief that every co-worker is a caregiver will ensure that we prioritize what's best for our patients and our team at Mercy as we enter our third century of care," Mr. Mackin said.
