MGMA: HHS Must Issue Version 5010 Contingency Plan

After researching the healthcare industry's transition to the new HIPAA Version 5010 electronic transaction standards, the Medical Group Management Association has indicated that the Department of Health and Human Services should immediately issue a contingency plan, according to an MGMA news release.

MGMA found that coordination among several providers, practices and their trading partners has not yet occurred despite the Jan. 1, 2012 deadline, according to the news release. Of providers surveyed, 4.5 percent stated their Version 5010 implementation status was fully completed, while 50 percent said their implementation is between 26 and 99 percent complete.

Additionally, only 5.7 percent of respondents indicated all of their major health plans have contacted them regarding Version 5010, and 21.7 percent of providers surveyed said internal testing with their practice management system vendor has not yet been scheduled.

MGMA has since urged HHS to encourage providers and health plans to concentrate on the most critical data requirements of electronic claims and other transactions, the release said.
