In 2011, Iowa hospitals provided more than $1.47 billion in community benefits and served more than 6.2 million people through community service programs, according to a report from the Iowa Hospital Association.
Bad debt and Medicare/Medicaid losses totaled almost $625 million of that total. Community benefits programs and services, such as research and health improvement services, represented $148.7 million of the total.
