In fiscal year 2010, Michigan hospitals provided nearly $2.6 billion in community benefits, according to a report from the Michigan Health & Hospital Association.
Of that total, roughly $970 million came in the form of uncompensated care, including charity care and bad debt. Other community benefit forms were health improvement services and unreimbursed Medicaid services.
Michigan hospitals also experienced a lower operating margin than the national average in FY 2010. Michigan hospitals had an average profit margin of 2.8 percent, while the nationwide average was 5.5 percent.
