CMS has increased the number of medical records that recovery audit contractors can request from providers with a low volume of Medicare claims, according to an AHA News Now report.
Starting Aug. 22, RACs can request up to 35 records per 45 days from providers whose calculated limit was 34 requests or less. Each limit is based on the provider's prior calendar year Medicare claims volume, and the type of claims do not factor into the limit.
The limit is also equal to one percent of all claims submitted for the previous calendar year divided by eight. RACs may go more than 45 days between record requests, but they cannot make requests more frequently than every 45 days.
