Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) signed legislation that requires physicians and hospitals to publicly post prices for their most commonly provided services.
Under the legislation, physicians must make prices available to the public for their 25 most common services. Large hospitals will be required to post prices for their 50 most common inpatient and outpatient services.
Beginning Oct. 1, 2014, the law also requires Arizona's Medicaid agency to reimburse hospitals based on inpatient diagnosis rather than the length of a patient's hospital stay.
"Today, Arizonans have little or no information about the actual cost of different medical procedures," Gov. Brewer said in the release. "This common sense legislation will make the price of healthcare services available to patients."
