The American Hospital Association defended current tax exemptions for non-profit hospitals to issue bonds or receive donations against the tides of budget federal cutting, arguing the protections are necessary for health systems to acquire the capital needed to comply with regulations and market conditions under health reform.
Hospitals have provided more than $367 billion in uncompensated care since 2000 and contribute greatly to the economic benefit of their communities, the AHA said in a statement before Congress.
The AHA concluded that reimbursement reductions, population health initiatives and shrinking access to capital make it imperative that Congress preserve current exemptions for non-profit hospitals as they work to reform the tax code.
