2Q Profit at Universal Health Services Grows 3.8%

King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services reported a positive second quarter, as net income rose 3.8 percent year-over-year from $103.6 million in 2011 to $107.6 million this year.

Net revenue in the second quarter of 2012 grew slightly at 1 percent, totaling $1.73 billion. EBITDA in the second quarter totaled $293.5 million, up from $291.1 million last year.

For the first six months ended June 30, 2012, UHS' net income totaled $236.2 million — an 8.4 percent increase from $217.8 million recorded in the first six months of 2011. Net revenue over the first six months has also held steady. It grew 2.5 percent from $3.44 billion last year to $3.53 billion this year.


UHS owns or operates 193 hospitals and behavioral health facilities across the United States, with behavioral health comprising most of its business.

Of the 20 acute-care hospitals it owns, adjusted admissions fell 1.3 percent in the second quarter ended June 30. Revenue per adjusted admission dropped 0.9 percent, while total admissions fell 4.3 percent.
