HHS and Federal Communications Commission have selected members for a new workgroup that will promote innovation in health information technology, including mobile medical applications, and identify ways to improve patient safety through health IT.
The Food and Drug Administration Safety Innovation Act Workgroup will report to the Health IT Policy Committee, which advises the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology.
The FDA, in consultation with the FCC and ONC, is required by the FDA Safety and Innovation Act to propose a strategy and recommendations for a regulatory framework for health IT. These three agencies will review and consider the recommendations provided by the Health IT Policy Committee based on input from the workgroup.
The workgroup's membership includes agency officials, venture capital investors, information technology vendors, health IT vendors, small businesses and other stakeholders. It will hold its first meeting April 29.
