Missouri nursing home loses CMS funding after patient death

CMS has terminated its Medicare and Medicaid agreement with Senath (Mo.) South Health Care Center, effective July 25, according to a public notice from the agency.

"These actions are taken because CMS has determined that Senath South Health Care Center failed to attain substantial compliance with certain Medicare and Medicaid participation requirements," CMS said in the notice.

The skilled nursing facility's loss of federal funding comes several weeks after police said a resident fatally beat another patient at the facility, according to ABC affiliate KAIT. The Senath chief of police and the mayor told local news outlets there were issues with the facility's past administrative leaders and that a new administration has recently taken over.

According to Senath Mayor Joe Lane, the county is working with a prosecuting attorney who plans to file an injunction against the facility if safety issues do not improve within 90 days.

The 150-bed facility provides long- and short-term care for people with complex medical illnesses. Since 2023, CMS inspection reports have documented 31 deficiencies at the for-profit owned facility, according to ProPublica's Nursing Home Inspect tracker
