A California nursing home was ordered to pay $30.9 million in damages in the wake of a resident's death.
The verdict against Pine Creek Care Center in Roseville, owned by Carlsbad, Calif.-based Plum Healthcare Group, was handed down by a jury in an elder abuse trial in Sacramento Superior Court, according to a Jan. 25 news release from Dudensing Law, which represented the plaintiff.
The resident, Sam Rios, stayed at Pine Creek Care Center for only two weeks in 2017, according to the release. During his time there, Mr. Rios developed two heel pressure sores, one of which he lived with until he died in 2018.
The jury granted the plaintiffs $5.9 million in compensatory damages plus $25 million in punitive damages.
