Tenured faculty members at the Hilo, Hawaii-based Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy have taken a vote of "no confidence" for Dean Carolyn Ma, PharmD, according to West Hawaii Today.
The school is in the process of restructuring its program because of declining enrollment and changes to the healthcare environment across the state. Demand within Hawaii for pharmacy jobs has decreased because of the rise of larger pharmacies.
According to West Hawaii Today, there is disagreement among faculty on how to guide the pharmacy school in a new direction.
Ken Hon, PhD, interim vice chancellor for academic affairs, told West Hawaii Today the no confidence vote doesn't have any legal standing, but is a message to the administration that faculty members don't like the direction the pharmacy school is pursuing.
Dr. Ma joined the pharmacy school in 2007 and has been dean since 2016. She told West Hawaii Today she was told not all of the tenured faculty was asked to vote and that tenured faculty make up less than half of faculty at the pharmacy school.
Dr. Hon told West Hawaii Today that he is working with Dr. Ma and the rest of the faculty to "come up with a way we can restructure the academic curriculum to make it more relevant to the health care needs of the state right now and into the next 10 years or so."
