ProvideGx, a company established by Premier in January to address generic drug shortages, will start with manufacturing a blood pressure medication that has been hard to obtain.
The company, a subsidiary of Premier, will begin supplying metoprolol injections to health systems and providers in mid-February. The medication often is used to treat patients having hypertensive emergencies and has been in short supply since 2016. Premier did not disclose how much the injection will cost.
ProvideGx will partner with drugmaker Baxter International to mitigate shortages and make more generic drugs available for purchase through Premier's group-purchasing organization.
In the coming months, Premier's ProvideGx said it will introduce a variety of generic drugs from a list of more than 60 crucial drugs, starting with sterile generic injectables.
Financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed.
