Weight loss drugs can lead to loss of muscle mass

Drugs prescribed for weight loss including Wegovy and Ozempic could lead to loss of muscle mass, CBS News reported May 3.

While Ozempic is a type-2 diabetes treatment and not officially approved as a weight loss drug, some physicians have prescribed it and a similar drug, Mounjaro after seeing benefits related to weight loss.

The loss of muscle mass is concerning because it is typically associated with the body aging and can lead to loss of balance, weakness and other side effects, according to Harvard Medical School.

Quick weight loss can also induce other conditions like sarcopenia and bone density issues, according to CBS. Patients taking the medications should combat the effects by engaging in strength workouts and adding more protein in their diet.
