A record 42,887 organ transplants were performed in the U.S. last year, up 3.7 percent from 2021, according to preliminary data the United Network for Organ Sharing shared Jan. 10.
Three things to know:
1. UNOS reported record annual totals for four types of organ transplants in 2022:
- Kidney — 25,498
- Liver — 9,528
- Heart — 4,111
- Lung — 2,692
2. There were 14,903 deceased organ donors in 2022, marking a 7.5 percent increase from the year prior and the 12th consecutive year of record growth.
3. A total of 6,466 people were living organ donors last year, down slightly from 2021. This figure peaked at 7,389 in 2019 and fell significantly during the pandemic, UNOS said.
