3 dead after medical helicopter crash

Three crew members died in a medical helicopter crash in Oklahoma on Jan. 20, according to the air ambulance provider Air Evac Lifeteam.

The crew had transported a patient to Oklahoma City and was returning to base in Weatherford, Okla., when the company's control center lost contact with the helicopter at 11:23 p.m. local time. The helicopter crashed around midnight, according to The New York Times

Air Evac Lifeteam has turned over the investigation to the National Transportation Safety Board, which said the crash site was located near Hydro, Okla., about 63 miles west of Oklahoma City.

"Our primary focus is on supporting the families and our team members," Air Evac Lifeteam said in a Jan. 21 Facebook post. "At this time, we are not sharing the names of the crew members aboard the flight."

The company operates more than 150 air ambulance bases in 18 states, with flight crews consisting of a pilot, flight nurse and flight paramedic.
