Police arrested and jailed a man reportedly involved in a Sept. 11 incident during which shots were fired at Kaiser Permanente Downey (Calif.) Medical Center, NBC4 News reports.
Here are six things to know:
1. Jesus Chavez, 34, was jailed Sept. 12 in lieu of $50,000 bail, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department inmate records obtained by NBC4 News.
2. Police were called to the medical center shortly before noon Sept. 11 after reports of a possible active shooter at the facility. Officials proceeded to search the hospital for more than an hour, according to ABC7 News. More than 400 people were evacuated from the facility during the search.
3. Witnesses told police the incident began after Mr. Chavez, reportedly a patient in the mental health unit, began kicking walls and breaking windows. One witness told authorities Mr. Chavez seemed to have gotten angry over a scheduled medical appointment, ABC7 reports.
4. During an afternoon press conference Sept. 11, police said Mr. Chavez caused a disturbance at the hospital and threw a chair out of a window before producing a handgun. Investigators said Mr. Chavez surrendered as soon as he was confronted.
5. Police said during the media event that evidence indicated Mr. Chavez acted alone; however, the investigation is still ongoing. Authorities are also investigating whether the sound of furniture being thrown out the window was mistaken for the gunshots some witnesses claimed to have heard.
6. In a prepared statement to Becker's Hospital Review Sept. 12, Kaiser confirmed the incident and said the hospital campus has since reopened and officials are working to reschedule all missed appointments. No injuries occurred during the incident.
The statement continued:
"The safety of our patients, employees and physicians is paramount. We recognize the stress that can be brought on by a situation like this. We're offering behavioral health services and support to our patients, employees and physicians who were onsite.
"We are working closely with law enforcement and ask that all questions about this incident be directed to the Downey Police Department and L.A. County Sheriff's Department. We also want to thank the Downey Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for their extraordinary response and support."
