UCSF Health in San Francisco has selected Krishna Komanduri, MD, to serve as division chief of hematology-oncology, effective July 1.
Dr. Komanduri, who specializes in transplantation and cellular immunotherapy, will also serve as physician-in-chief of the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and as clinical director of the UCSF Living Therapeutics Initiative — two newly created roles.
He joins UCSF from the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami, where he served in several leadership roles, including as director of the adult stem cell transplant program.
Dr. Komanduri's research is focused on improving the outcomes of patients undergoing transplantation for hematologic malignancies and on the use of immune-based therapies for all cancers. He is a former president of the American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy.
"There is no area in medicine in which the needs are greater than hematology and oncology, and no area in which the opportunities are more thrilling," said Robert Wachter, MD, professor and chair of UCSF's department of medicine. "I am confident that Krishna Komanduri will be an exceptional leader for our hematology-oncology enterprise, across all of our missions. As someone who began his career with us as a fellow and junior faculty member, we are pleased to welcome him back to UCSF. "
Dr. Komanduri earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and completed a hematology-oncology fellowship at UCSF.
