For the first time, a large study of young women had no new cases of cervical cancer after receiving the human papillomavirus vaccine.
The study, published in Journal of the National Cancer Institute, followed 40,000 Scottish women who received the HPV vaccine between ages 12 and 13 and were born between 1988 and 1996.
The women, currently between the ages of 28 and 36, have had no cases of cervical cancer and have 2.5 times lower chances of developing the cancer compared to unvaccinated populations.
The study was spearheaded by researchers at Public Health Scotland.
