Ohio system CNO: How hospitals can leverage nurse informaticists

Jill Evans, MSN, RN, associate chief nursing officer of clinical informatics at Cleveland-based MetroHealth System, sees nurse informaticists as "interpreters" between technology and hospital leaders and staff.

Ms. Evans spoke during a webinar hosted by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society on the topic, according to a Nov. 20 post from Wolters Kluwer.

Nurses need to adopt AI and understand how it can help elevate their work, not replace their roles, she said, adding that nursing informaticists are critical in relaying this message.

"[Nurse informaticists] must be able to look at the information, talk to leaders of the organization and nurses at the bedside, explain to them what that data means, and get their feedback," Ms. Evans said. "If they understand the information they're putting into the electronic health record and their contributions to it, they can better understand how they can make positive change for their patients."
