Many colleges and universities launched nursing programs and partnerships last year to address persistent shortages nationwide. Here are 135 nursing programs that launched or expanded in 2022:
- Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger College of Health Sciences will use a $2.5 million state Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grant to renovate its School of Nursing in Lewistown, Pa., and double its nursing program.
- Hattiesburg-based University of Southern Mississippi College of Nursing and Health Professionals received a $100,000 grant to expand its nursing program to include more diversity, inclusion and equity when working with patients.
- Fayetteville (N.C.) Technical Community College is expanding its nursing program with mannequins that can simulate various illnesses.
- Alaska Pacific University and Yuut Elitnaurviat People's Learning Center, both in Bethel, graduated its first students from its new licensed practical nurses program.
- St. Paul, Minn.-based University of St. Thomas launched the Susan S. Morrison School of Nursing.
- South Bend, Ind.-based Beacon Health System and Ivy Tech Community College South Bend/Elkhart launched Beacon Scholars, a program designed to attract, educate and train nurses to address a local shortage.
- The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Abramson Family Center for Nursing Excellence, both based in Philadelphia, launched a Diversity Nurse Leader Fellowship Program.
- Bozeman-based Montana State University's Mark and Robyn Jones College of Nursing received nearly $4 million to increase the number of qualified clinical nursing faculty and preceptors across HHS Region 8, which includes Montana, Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming.
- Reading, Pa.-based Alvernia University is relocating, expanding and modernizing its John and Karen Arnold School of Nursing.
- Atlanta-based Piedmont Healthcare launched a 12-month Transition to Practice Nurse Residency program across all 15 facilities at Piedmont Healthcare.
- Minneapolis-based University of Minnesota School of Nursing and the Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic are collaborating to improve undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate education degree opportunities.
- DuBois-based Penn Highlands Healthcare and Pleasant Gap-based Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology partnered to provide tuition, clinical rotations and employment agreements to students entering CPI's licensed practical nursing program.
- Carson City, Nev.-based Carson Tahoe Health expanded its nurse apprentice program to 40 apprentices.
- Dayton, Ohio-based Sinclair Community College will offer a bachelor of science in nursing for the first time in the college's history beginning in January 2024.
- The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services is offering $5 million in scholarship money for nursing students throughout the state to bring more students to the program.
- Tampa, Fla.-based USF Health is opening an advanced patient simulation training program in its College of Nursing on the St. Petersburg campus.
- Ohio Board of Nursing and the Nurse Licensure Compact have partnered to provide a multistate license option.
- Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport no longer requires the Test of Essential Academic Skills as a criterion for admission into its pre-licensure nursing education majors.
- UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester, Mass., is working with partners to launch a formal nurse preceptor academy to address the New England region's nursing shortage and increase access to care.
- The West Virginia Professional Charter School Board approved a proposal for the first charter school's accelerated nursing program.
- Tempe, Ariz.-based University of Phoenix's College of Nursing received accreditation for its doctor of nursing practice degree program.
- Wyoming-based University of Michigan Health-West is offering up to three semesters of paid tuition to Grand Rapids Community College nursing students who agree to work for its organization after graduation.
- Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente Southern California partnered with the Emergency Nurses Association to bring the Emergency Nurse Residency Program to 15 of the health system's emergency departments.
- Dwyer Workforce Development, a nonprofit based in Baltimore, expanded its program in Texas to provide more free certified nursing assistant training.
- New York City-based Mount Sinai Health System unveiled its upgraded and renamed Mount Sinai Phillips School of Nursing, previously known as Phillips School of Nursing at Mount Sinai Beth Israel.
- Valhalla, N.Y.-based Westchester Medical Center Health Network graduated its first class of certified nurse assistants at Schervier Pavilion skilled nursing facility.
- Mississippi State University partnered with Jackson-based University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Nursing to create a dual degree program in which students can complete an MSU degree in interdisciplinary studies alongside a UMMC nursing degree.
- Bangor, Maine-based Husson University revived an online program called "RN-to-BSN" for nurses who want to earn a bachelor's degree.
- Haverhill, Mass.-based Northern Essex Community College is participating in a national program called Accelerating and Diversifying Nursing Pathways at Community Colleges Initiative to make nursing education more accessible to minority groups.
- Cedar Falls-based University of Northern Iowa gained approval to develop and launch a bachelor of science in nursing program in fall 2024.
- Corewell Health, which has dual headquarters in Grand Rapids and Southfield, Mich., will launch the state's first nurse apprentice program in 2023.
- Central Maine Healthcare in Lewiston will offer nursing students financial assistance through a new tuition reimbursement program.
- In partnership with HCA Houston Healthcare, Galen College of Nursing will open its fourth Texas nursing education campus in Houston in 2023 as it offers a three-year BSN program starting Jan. 9.
- Albany, N.Y.-based Maria College is seeking federal funding to create a virtual reality nurse training program.
- Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins School of Nursing created a policy honors program for students to gain skills in policy analysis and advocacy.
- Jersey College in Teterboro and Commonwealth Health have collaborated to establish a School of Nursing on Moses Taylor Hospital’s campus in Scranton, Pa.

- Morgantown-based West Virginia University expanded its nursing program to Beckley, W.Va., and opened a campus in Bridgeport, W.Va.
- Concord, N.C.-based Cabarrus College of Health Sciences launched two new nursing programs.
- The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith will use a portion of an $18.7 million donation to expand its nursing program.
- Baton Rouge (La.) Community College and Grand Canyon University in Phoenix signed an agreement allowing students enrolled in the community college's registered nursing program to complete online coursework toward earning a baccalaureate of science in nursing or a master of science in nursing at Grand Canyon University.
- New Orleans-based Ochsner Health expanded its Ochsner Scholars Program for at least 10 applicants to Loyola University of New Orleans' new accelerated bachelor of science in nursing program Aug. 30.
- Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Ferris State University bolstered its nursing program to 96 students.
