More than 100 state and medical societies, including the American Medical Association, sent a letter to the president, vice president and congressional leaders urging reform of the Medicare physician payment formula as part of any deficit-reduction plan, according to an AMA news release.
In the letter, the physician organizations told policymakers that the cost of physician payment reform has been growing over the years as Congress enacted frequent short-terms fixes. If action is not taken now, the cost of physician payment reform will escalate to $500 billion in a few years, the letter states.
The AMA has called for a three-pronged approach to reforming the physician payment system, including a repeal of the SGR formula, a five-year period of stable Medicare physician payments and demonstrations and pilot projects that could form the basis for a new Medicare physician payment system.
