In their ongoing fight to overhaul Medicare, Republicans are pointing to a new estimate from the 2011 Medicare Trustee Report suggesting Medicare's 75-year unfunded obligations could add up to $36.8 trillion, according to a news report by The Hill.
The new estimate, which was sent to the Senate Budget Committee, is far greater than last month's estimate of $24.4 trillion.
Meanwhile, Democrats argued a total repeal of healthcare reform would have damaging implications. A memo sent to the Subcommittee on Health and the Committee on Ways and Means, which also cited the 2011 Medicare Trustee Report, showed a repeal of the Affordable Care Act would lead to a 134 percent increase on payroll tax or 53 percent reduction on benefits.
The GOP has long fought to repeal the healthcare reform law.
