Flint, Mich.-based McLaren Health Care has submitted a certificate of need application to build a $308 million hospital, according to a Crain's Detroit Business report.
If approved, McLaren would transfer 200 of 308 beds from its McLaren-Oakland hospital in Pontiac, Mich., to the new hospital at McLaren-Clarkston (Mich.).
The plan is expected to meet opposition from nearby hospitals and a business-labor coalition. Jack Weiner, CEO of St. Joseph Mercy Oakland in Pontiac, has said another hospital in the region is unnecessary, while The Economic Alliance for Michigan has said additional hospitals would increase healthcare costs, according to the report.
