The Louisiana Legislature's Joint Budget Committee gave final approval for the $1.088 billion construction project of the Louisiana State University Medical Center, the 424-bed hospital that will replace Charity Hospital, which was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, according to a Times-Picayune report.
Earlier this month, the proposal was laid out, and the hospital will not incur any state debt. It will also receive average annual state appropriations of $52.5 million during the first six years of operation.
Construction on University Medical Center is slated to begin soon, and the New Orleans hospital is projected to open in 2015.
