An administrative law judge is recommending Florida state officials reject plans by Shands Jacksonville (Fla.) to build a new 100-bed hospital, according to a Jacksonville.com report.
Judge W. David Watkins ruled that a new hospital would damage Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, causing between $3.5 million and $4.9 million annual losses due to lost patient revenues and potential staffing costs. The judge also ruled there is no need in the area for a new hospital.
The University of Florida & Shands Health System in Gainesville, Fla., parent company of Shands Jackson, maintains the area needs an inpatient facility. UF&Shands will continue with plans to develop an outpatient medical complex on the Shands Jacksonville North campus.
Both sides have roughly two weeks to respond to the ruling and submit exceptions to the Agency for Health Care Administration, according to the report.
