Illinois to Reconsider Centegra, Mercy Health CON Requests for New Hospitals

The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board is scheduled to reconsider two health systems' certificate of need requests for new hospitals later this month, according to a Crain's Chicago Business report.

In December, the board rejected a proposal by Crystal Lake, Ill.-based Centegra Health System to build a $233 million, 128-bed hospital in Huntley, Ill., and a separate proposal by Janesville, Wis.-based Mercy Health System to build a $200 million, 70-bed hospital 10 miles away in Crystal Lake.

Centegra's proposal lost on a 4-4 vote with one board member absent; five votes are needed for approval. Mercy's proposal lost 6-2. The board said there was not a demonstrated need for more hospital beds in the area. Some hospitals in the area support this view and have opposed Centegra's and Mercy's applications for new hospitals.

The board is reconsidering its decision based on an administrative law judge's finding that there was a clerical error in the CON applications. The judge recommended the board reconsider the cases with the error corrected. The board is scheduled to review the CON applications July 23 to July 24.
