Becker's Healthcare is pleased to recognize the following physician leaders in the 2017 edition of the Physician Leaders of Hospitals and Health Systems list.

 The list features hospital and health system presidents and CEOs who also hold medical degrees. All members featured on this list have demonstrated outstanding leadership and clinical expertise throughout their careers. Many individuals have served in the top spots of multiple hospitals throughout their careers in addition to community boards and national organizations. These physicians also have accomplished clinical careers, giving them unique insight into the healthcare industry.

Hospitals led by physicians consistently appear as top hospitals among rating and ranking sites such as U.S. News & World Report and Healthgrades. Many CEOs featured on this list have led their institutions through significant growth projects and technology installations, and continue to keep an eye on future development.

Richard Afable, MD. Executive Vice President of St. Joseph Health Southern California Region and President and CEO of St. Joseph Hoag Health (Irvine, Calif.). Dr. Afable became CEO of St. Joseph Hoag Health and executive vice president of St. Joseph Health Southern California Region in 2013 when Newport Beach, Calif.-based Hoag Hospital, which he led as CEO for eight years, affiliated with St. Joseph Health. Steve Allen, MD. John Brumsted, MD. President and CEO of University of Vermont Health Network and CEO of University of Vermont Medical Center (Burlington). Thomas Buchholz, MD.
