A report from the HHS Office of the Inspector General found Rapid City (S.D.) Regional Hospital, a 368-bed hospital that is part of Regional Health, must repay the government $256,789 in overbilled Medicare funds.
The OIG audited Rapid City Regional's Medicare inpatient and outpatient claims during 2010 and 2011. Most of the hospital's overpayments came on the outpatient side because Rapid City Regional's computerized pharmacy and charge systems were not programmed correctly for Lupron, a common cancer drug. The OIG also said errors were made due to human error.
Following its report, the OIG recommended Rapid City Regional repay the overbilled Medicare funds and improve its Medicare billing compliance, and the hospital agreed with both.
