A Columbus, Ohio physician and his clinic were found guilty of billing the state's Medicaid program for medical equipment that was never purchased.
Robert Florea, MD, and his company, Buckeye Health and Research, were each convicted of one count of Medicaid fraud by the Franklin County, Ohio, jury, according to an Oct. 31 news release from the Ohio Attorney General's Office.
Dr. Florea claimed reimbursement for more than 5,100 pieces of medical equipment over a three-year span, but records showed that he bought only 460 of the items, according to the release. The claims caused Medicaid to lose $1.5 million.
A sentencing date has not yet been set.
