New Hampshire physician pleads guilty in $1.9M Medicare fraud scheme

A former New Hampshire physician pleaded guilty to healthcare fraud for his role in a $1.9 million Medicare fraud scheme. 

According to a May 24 news release from the Justice Department, Steven Powell, MD, who now lives in Alpharetta, Ga., pleaded guilty to signing orders for durable medical equipment that he knew were used to submit fraudulent claims to Medicare. 

Dr. Powell was paid kickbacks for signing the orders, according to the Justice Department. 

He faces a sentence of no more than 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines.
