A former employee claims Bayonne (N.J.) Medical Center fired him after he reported illegal staffing practices in the hospital's hematology department, according to a Jersey Journal report.
A former hematology technician, Ceferino Doculan Jr., worked at BMC for about 20 years. In 2010, he began reporting issues regarding staffing. The alleged problems included his supervisor not possessing proper credentials and qualified technicians not being present to perform certain blood screenings.
Mr. Doculan was fired in September 2010, roughly one month after he began voicing concerns about the staffing. He is seeking reinstatement and unspecified damages, according to the report.
BMC has denied all allegations of the retaliatory firing. In a statement, a BMC spokesperson said Mr. Doculan was terminated for "performance-based reasons," according to the report.
A trial is scheduled for Nov. 26.
