The American Hospital Association released a letter this week to the departments of Health and Human Services and Justice fighting back against the departments' allegations that electronic health records may be used for upcoding, according to AHANews.
The AHA letter reiterated the healthcare industry's commitment to combating Medicare fraud and called for national guidelines for reporting emergency room or clinic visits, a move the industry has been proposed 11 times since 2003.
AHA President Rich Umbdenstock said it is "critically important" to recognize that more the more accurate documentation and coding provided by EHRs does not equate with fraud.
